Social networking: An Introduction to Politics

By

The whole world witnessed the revolution that took place in Egypt as we saw how Hosni Sayyid Mubarak was overthrown by the people of Egypt. That was just a tip of the iceberg, we are presently witnessing a revolution that is about to take place in Libya. What's going on? What's happening?

We are witnessing the power of Social networking in the world or what i call " The Power of One Voice". There is no way we could achieve this stage, were it not for information technology. Since the inception of social networking sites, dozens of people have been able to share ideas, knowledge, belief and everything that makes one human.

In Africa, social networking sites has introduced a new era in politics. Politics in Africa is taken a different shape and i believe this is as a result of the power that social networking has given to the people of Africa. Gone are the days when African leaders have been insensitive to the plight of the people, gone are those days when only the top elite had the opportunity to govern the people.

How did Social networking do this? By opening the eyes of the people of Africa to communication. As African people became used to social networking sites, they began to understand the potentials of expression. This could not have happened without interacting with other people in the continent.

Due to this Development, Politics has taken a different toll; through interaction, Africa has been able to embrace change and have given corrupt leader, a very big chase.

In Nigeria, we have seen the introduction of debates for Presidential, Gubernatorial and Senatorial Candidates of more than 50 parties. As the elections are close-by, there is tension in the air for Corrupt politicians as Nigerians have embraced transparency and shunned Corruption. Furthermore, social political campaigns have been introduced in Nigeria as demonstrated by the President, Goodluck Jonathan who initiated the Facebook campaign.

In the years to come, i believe there will be a total transformation of politics in Africa. This will occur only if we can continue to connect and communicate with each other.
